Samariton Woman at the Well

John 4:15-18
” The woman said to him,
“Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty,
or have to come here to draw water.”

Jesus said to her,
“Go call your husband, and come here.”

The woman answered him,
“I have no husband.”

Jesus said to her,
“You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have
had five husbands and the one you now have is not your
husband. What you have said it true.”

Finally in verse 18 “Sir give me this water”, she stops resisting his promise (GIFT) and starts to turn, asking him for what he offers her.  Jesus faithfully pursued her, even in the midst of her unbelief. In Gods word it says that an unbelieving heart is evil (Hebrews 3:12), so while she is still yet evil he pursues her. Now as a woman we all desire to be pursued, in our eyes, to be pursued it to be loved, and Jesus pursued this woman in a way no other man had. Jesus pursued her, not for his own personal gain (sexual pleasure), but it was for her gain, he pursued her because he wanted to GIVE to her.

“So that I will not be thirsty, or have to come here to draw water.”
First she is acknowledging her need, and by asking for what he offers she is seeking him to meet that need, and no longer herself. She knows that she needs water and that she has to draw her water from somewhere , but she no longer desires to draw her water from this well.

“Go call your husband, and come here.”
Now in this time and culture things are much different, Jesus asking for her to go and get her husband would not have been odd, but respectful of her and her marriage and her husbands authority over her. But… Jesus knows everything about her, he is asking her this for a greater purpose!

She says,
“I have no husband.”

Jesus responds,” You are right in saying ‘I have no husband”. He is acknowledging the TRUTH in her words! Now remembering what we went through last week, she was believing lies about the life in which she lives, believing ‘it’s not so bad’, convincing herself that it’s better then it really is (verse 12), so it is vital that he focus on TRUTH.

Then Jesus gets to the HEART issue, SIN, the whole point and purpose of Jesus even speaking to her is for this moment.
“For you have had five husbands and the one you now have is not your husband.”
I can just imagine the sting she must have felt, for it is painful to have your sin revealed. He is acknowledging that he knows EVERYTHING about her (sin), yet they have never met before. He is not condemning her, just laying out the wall that stands between them.

~Stop right now, what ever you are doing, and ask the Lord to reveal the sin that stands between you and him. He desires to forgive you and free you from it.

“What you have said is true.”
Again he acknowledges the TRUTH, for the TRUTH will set us free. This women has been living in sin her whole life, in order to live in sin you have to live a lie, and to live a lie you have to believe a TON of lies, so many in fact that you are dead to TRUTH. He is drawing her out of the lie and into the truth. Therefore he is very specific and careful to point out what is right and true, but purposefully does not entertain the lie, as we noticed last week.
Pray , and ask the Lord to tell you the TRUTH

Now lets look back at what we have gone through so far in this story. This woman was physically drawn or led towards Jesus because of her need for water from that well. Jesus was waiting for her, then he pursues her, and he does so for her own sake, to give to her. He repeatedly offers her what she needs but does not have, and she resists, he then reveals the lies and shows the truth. Then she finally stops resisting and turns to him and asks him for what he is offering her, BUT….. he doesn’t give it to her just yet, WHY?

Pray about it
Think about it
